BAR: Full-Page Yes on 8 Ad in CA Papers

I think the Bay Area Reporter's staff has done an outstanding and laudable job of covering the Prop 8 and gay marriage battle, week in and week out for the last four or five months. But today I want to salute the paper for not just writing about an awful and deceptive ad in several dailies, but for calling out our opponents' claim that gays comprise only two percent of the state's population.

So far, the Yes on 8 people have not shared with the BAR where this stats comes from. And their contention that the marriage rights of straight people will be compromised if gays defeat Prop 8 and gay marriage equality continues, is so funny I don't need any medical marijuana to help me laugh.

I wish to express my deepest thanks to the Yes on 8 leadership for spending their money on the full-page ads. The lies and deceptions are doing much to motivate gays and our allies to vote NO NO NO on Prop 8.

From today's BAR Prop 8 update:

The Yes on 8 campaign took out a full-page ad in Monday's San Francisco Chronicle, repeating false claims that if Prop 8 fails, schoolchildren will be forced to learn about same-sex marriage in the classroom and religious freedoms will be lost.

"In legalizing gay marriage, the California Supreme Court [which ruled in favor of same-sex marriages May 15] declared that gay couples are a 'protected legal class,' elevating the rights of gay couples over those of the rest of Californians," the ad says.

No on 8's Geoff Kors said of the ad, "Once again, [Yes on 8's backers] continue to tell lies about what Prop 8 will do."

Similar ads have also appeared in the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Tribune ...

The Yes on 8 ad also states that, "The 98% of Californians who are not gay should not have their religious freedoms and freedom of expression be compromised to afford special legal rights for the 2% of Californians who are gay."

It was unclear where that statistic came from. Chip White, the Yes on 8 press secretary, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
