Federal Election Commission records released yesterday for the month of July show that five New York Times employees donated a total of $1,450 to Senator John Kerry's presidential campaign.

FEC files also show that no New York Times employees gave money to either President George W. Bush or independent candidate Ralph Nader in July.

My questions for you today regarding the donations below are as follows:

Did New York Times executives or editors in any way know about the contributions before they were made?

Do the donations violate the paper's ethical guidelines?

Should readers assume the contributions reflect the New York Times' editorial position on who is best qualified to win the November election?
